Cross River Assembly Suspends Bekwarra LGA Chair Over Alleged Misconduct, Fund Misuse
The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairperson of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Theresa Ushie, for three months over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.
This decision followed a formal petition submitted by eight out of ten councillors from the Bekwarra Legislative Council, accusing Ushie of administrative highhandedness, abuse of power, and consistent disregard for due process.
In a statement issued by Matthew Okache, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, the Assembly cited Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law as the legal basis for the suspension.
The resolution, passed during plenary, directs Hon. Theresa Ushie to step aside for 90 days to enable an impartial investigation into the allegations.
In the interim, the Assembly has appointed the Vice Chairman, Egbung Odama, as Acting Chairman. He is expected to ensure the smooth and stable running of the council during the investigation period.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, emphasized that the move reflects the Assembly's dedication to promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible governance at the grassroots level. He also tasked the House Committees on Judiciary and Public Petitions with carrying out a detailed investigation and submitting a report within the suspension period.
