Brett James, Grammy-Winning Songwriter, Dies in Plane Crash at 57

The music world is mourning the loss of Brett James, the Grammy Award-winning songwriter best known for penning “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” James tragically died in a plane crash in North Carolina on September 18, 2025. He was 57.

Authorities confirmed that James (full name Brett James Cornelius) was one of three victims in the crash, along with Melody Carole and Meryl Maxwell Wilson. The plane, a Cirrus SR22T, had taken off from Nashville’s John C. `Tune Airport before going down near Franklin, North Carolina, not far from Iotla Valley Elementary School. Thankfully, local officials confirmed that no students or staff were harmed.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash, with the NTSB leading the inquiry.

A Storied Career in Music

Brett James’ career spanned more than three decades. He first entered the scene as a solo artist but found his true calling in songwriting during the early 2000s. Over the years, he wrote or co-wrote nearly 500 songs, with credits on hits for Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, and Keith Urban.

His most celebrated work, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” earned two Grammy Awards in 2006: Best Country Song (for James as songwriter) and Best Female Country Vocal Performance (for Carrie Underwood). In 2020, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, cementing his place in country music history.

Remembered by Peers

Fellow artists and songwriters have been paying tribute. ASCAP honored him in a heartfelt message:

“Brett was a trusted collaborator to country’s greatest names, and a true advocate for his fellow songwriters. Brett, your ASCAP family misses you dearly. Thank you for your unforgettable music.”

Dierks Bentley also shared his grief, recalling their collaboration on “I Hold On.”

“One of the best singer-songwriters in our town… total legend. Our friendship and that song changed my life. Prayers for his family.”

A Life of Resilience

James’ path to success wasn’t straightforward. After his debut album failed to gain traction, he briefly stepped away from music and returned to medical school. But when artists like Faith Hill began recording his songs, his passion reignited, and his songwriting career soared.

Brett James is survived by his wife, Sandra Cornelius, and their children.

His legacy lives on through the countless songs that touched lives around the world.
