Deadly Attack in Niger State Leaves Dozens Dead

Niger State has begun 2026 in tragedy, as at least 30 people were killed and several others abducted in a violent attack on Kasuwan-Daji, a rural community in Shiroro Local Government Area. Residents said armed men emerged from nearby forests late on Wednesday, opening fire on villagers, burning homes and market stalls, and taking women, men, and children.

Survivors described the attack as sudden and terrifying. “I saw my neighbors being taken while others ran for their lives,” said one resident. Many villagers fled into nearby bushes, while others were caught in the chaos. Locals expressed frustration over the absence of security personnel, a problem that has plagued rural areas in Niger State for years.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the attack, describing it as “unacceptable” and assuring Nigerians that security agencies had been directed to apprehend the perpetrators. Officials said additional patrols and intelligence operations would be deployed to protect vulnerable communities. This attack is part of a pattern of repeated assaults on rural settlements in the region.

Analysts warn that addressing such violence requires a combination of improved security, community policing, and tackling underlying socioeconomic issues, such as poverty and unemployment. Local leaders are calling for urgent intervention, while humanitarian organizations are mobilizing aid for displaced families. Relief efforts include emergency food, shelter, and medical assistance for those affected by the attack.

As the community mourns the dead and searches for the abducted, Nigerians across the country are being reminded of the urgent need to strengthen rural security. Observers say sustained government action and long-term planning will be key to preventing future tragedies.
