Nigerians React as Burkina Faso Detains NAF Aircraft After Emergency Landing

A report that a Nigerian Air Force C-130 transport plane was held in Burkina Faso following an emergency landing has stirred outrage among many Nigerians. 

What Happened

• According to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — the bloc of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the aircraft reportedly violated Burkinabe airspace and was forced to land in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso on December 8, 2025. 

• The plane was carrying two crew members and nine other Nigerian military personnel. All are currently being held by Burkinabe authorities as the AES conducts an investigation. 

Burkinabe Reaction

The AES described the landing as a “violation of its airspace” and a breach of sovereignty, declaring that its air-defence systems have been placed on maximum alert. The alliance warned it would “neutralise any aircraft” that violates its airspace in future. 

NAF’s Position

The Nigerian Air Force responded by clarifying that the C-130 was not “grounded” in Burkina Faso, but rather made a precautionary landing due to a technical issue while on a ferry mission to Portugal. They confirmed the aircraft crew are safe and that the mission will continue once the situation is resolved. 

Why Nigerians Are Upset

The incident has sparked backlash among Nigerians, many of whom see the detention as an attempt by Burkina Faso’s junta to assert dominance or provoke Nigeria. A social-media user’s reaction summarised the sentiment: the detention is viewed by some as a show of force by a regime they consider increasingly erratic.

• The conflict between the Nigerian and Burkinabe positions calls for diplomacy, the condition of the detained personnel and the aircraft’s fate are under negotiations.

• Regional tensions may escalate if the AES follows through on its threat to treat future unauthorized landings as hostile acts.
